The engagement ring glossary
Choosing an engagement ring starts with understanding the details that define it - from the chosen gemstones to the setting style and the cut and shape of the stone. Below, you’ll find a considered guide to the most-loved options, designed to help you compare silhouettes, proportions and everyday practicality, and find the combination that feels right for you.
Our most-loved gemstones

Yellow Diamond
Warm, golden light with a contemporary edge.

Grey Diamond
Soft, understated sparkle - tonal, modern, and quietly distinctive.

Brown Diamond
A warmer neutral with depth; subtle sparkle that feels effortless.
Gemstone settings

Solitaire
A single centre stone in a clean, considered setting - timeless, and still the style most people come back to.

Trilogy
Three stones with a little more presence - often refined with modern proportions for a balanced feel.

Bezel
A smooth, minimal rim of metal that frames the stone - modern, secure, and designed for everyday wear.

Halo
A centre stone finished with a fine diamond frame for extra light, kept clean and understated in proportion.

East - west
An oval, emerald or pear set horizontally for a quietly unexpected finish, often paired with clean, low-profile settings.

Toi et Moi
two stones set side by side; modern, personal, and perfect if you like something less traditional.
Gemstone cuts and shapes

Round brilliant
The most classic and light-reflective cut; designed for maximum sparkle and enduring appeal.

Oval
An elongated shape that flatters the hand; popular for its balance of brilliance and soft, modern elegance.

Emerald cut
Defined by long, clean lines and step-cut facets; understated and architectural, prized for clarity over sparkle.

Cushion cut
A softened square or rectangular shape with rounded corners; romantic and vintage-inspired with gentle brilliance.

Pear cut
A teardrop silhouette combining round and marquise elements; elegant and expressive, often chosen for its individuality.

Marquise cut
An elongated shape with pointed ends; creates a bold, distinctive look and visually lengthens the finger.

How to choose an engagement ring
Start with their style: minimal or statement; classic or sculptural.
Choose the stone: diamond (natural or lab-grown) or a coloured gemstone that feels more individual.
Pick the setting: solitaire for simplicity, trilogy for presence, bezel for a clean, modern look and extra protection.
Think wearability: comfort, security, and setting height for everyday life.
Consider the stack: will it sit alongside a wedding band or other rings?
Choose your metal: 18ct for a deeper, warmer tone; 9ct for slightly harder-wearing durability and a more accessible price point.
Size with confidence: if it’s a surprise, we can help you make an educated guess - resizing is also complimentary.

Frequently Asked Questions
In many cases, yes - though it can depend on the design. For our engagement rings, resizing is complimentary, so you can propose with confidence.
Lab-grown and natural diamonds are the same material - they have the same chemical and physical properties, and they look the same to the naked eye. The main difference is origin: natural diamonds are formed in the earth over time, while lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment.
In practice, that difference affects a few things:
- Price: lab-grown diamonds are often more price-accessible for the same size and appearance.
- Traceability: lab-grown can feel more straightforward to trace because the supply chain is shorter.
- Choice & flexibility: lab-grown can give you more flexibility if you’re prioritising carat size or a particular shape within a set budget.
- Sentiment & tradition: some people prefer natural diamonds for their rarity and history; others prefer lab-grown for its modern approach.
There isn’t a “right” choice - it’s about what you value most. If you’re deciding, we can help you compare stones side-by-side and choose the one that feels right for you. Learn more in our guide to lab grown diamonds
The 4Cs - cut, colour, clarity and carat - are the standard framework for assessing diamonds. They matter because they help you compare stones clearly and understand what’s driving the look (and price).
- Cut: How well the diamond is proportioned and finished — this is what controls brightness and sparkle, so it’s often the first place to prioritise.
- Colour: How colourless a white diamond appears (typically graded on a D–Z scale). Near-colourless grades can offer a beautiful balance; warmer tones can feel more individual.
- Clarity: Natural inclusions and surface characteristics, graded under magnification. Many people aim for “eye-clean”, but visible inclusions can also be part of a stone’s character.
- Carat: The diamond’s weight (not exactly its size). Two stones can have the same carat weight but look different depending on shape and cut.
Both are solid gold. 18ct has a higher gold content and a deeper, warmer tone; 9ct is slightly harder-wearing (so it can show fewer everyday marks) and typically more price accessible.
Every ring is crafted in London by skilled jewellers, with a focus on fine workmanship, considered proportions and pieces made to last. As a female-founded independent jeweller, we work in recycled precious metals and use responsibly sourced, conflict-free gemstones handpicked by Maya herself - with sustainability built into how we design and make.
You’ll also find a more personal experience, whether you’re choosing a ready-to-wear piece, a one-of-a-kind design, or creating something bespoke.
It’s worth considering, especially for higher-value pieces or anything you’ll wear every day. Many UK insurers recommend covering an engagement ring for its full replacement value and keeping valuations up to date (often every few years). Depending on what you prefer, you can usually add jewellery to your home insurance or choose a standalone jewellery policy.
If you’ve commissioned a ring through our bespoke service, your piece also comes with our bespoke warranty, alongside lifetime cleaning and care. And if you’d like help arranging insurance, we can recommend an insurer as part of the bespoke process.
In 2026, the shift is towards rings that feel considered and individual: chunkier gold bands, bezel settings (sleek and protective), sculptural silhouettes, and vintage-inspired stones and antique cuts. Elongated shapes - especially oval and marquise - continue to rise, often styled in modern settings, including east-west and refined trilogy designs.
The overall mood is less about “bigger” and more about design, proportion and personality - but the most important trend is always the one that feels like you: chosen to suit your style, made to be worn every day, for years to come.
