What Can You Do With Inherited Jewellery?
A guide to remodelling heirloom jewellery, preserving memories and creating something you'll wear every day.

Jewellery often carries more than material value.
It can remind us of the people who wore it before us, mark family history or become one of the few tangible connections we have to someone we love.
Yet many inherited pieces spend years tucked away in jewellery boxes. They may not suit your style, fit comfortably or feel practical to wear today.
That doesn't mean they should remain unworn.
At Maya Magal, we regularly work with clients to thoughtfully transform inherited jewellery into contemporary pieces that honour the original while becoming part of everyday life once again.
SHOULD I REDESIGN INHERITED JEWELLERY?
There isn't a right or wrong answer.
Some pieces are perfect exactly as they are.
Others may benefit from thoughtful changes that allow them to be worn and enjoyed again.
Many of our clients choose to remodel inherited jewellery because:
- the design feels dated
- the ring no longer fits
- they don't wear yellow gold
- they'd prefer a necklace instead of a ring
- they'd like to combine several family pieces
- they want to preserve the sentiment while creating something more personal
For many people, redesigning inherited jewellery is less about changing its history and more about continuing it.

WHAT CAN BE REMODELLED?
Many precious materials can be reused.
Depending on the piece, we can often work with:
- gold
- gemstones
- diamonds
- sapphires
- wedding bands
- engagement rings
- family heirlooms
During an initial consultation, we'll assess what can safely be incorporated into a new design.

CAN INHERITED GOLD BE REUSED?
In many cases, yes.
Existing gold can often be melted down and incorporated into a new piece.
Sometimes clients choose to retain the original gold entirely.
Others prefer to preserve the original ring while resetting the gemstone into a new design.
Every project is different, which is why we always begin with a conversation.
CAN INHERITED DIAMONDS BE RESET?
Absolutely.
Resetting a family diamond into a contemporary engagement ring is one of the most popular bespoke commissions we undertake.
It's a way of carrying family history forward while creating something that reflects your own style.

THE BESPOKE PROCESS
Every remodelling project begins with understanding the story behind the jewellery.
We'll discuss:
- the original piece
- its sentimental value
- what you'd like to preserve
- how you'd like to wear it
- your lifestyle
- your design preferences
From there, we create sketches before handcrafting your new piece in our London workshop.
WHY CLIENTS CHOOSE TO REMODEL JEWELLERY?
No two projects are ever the same.
Some people want a grandmother's engagement ring redesigned into a necklace.
Others combine several inherited rings into one contemporary piece.
Some simply want to resize a treasured ring so it can be worn every day.
Our role is to help find the approach that feels right for both the jewellery and the memories attached to it.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
We don't believe inherited jewellery should sit forgotten in a drawer.
We believe it should continue its story.
By carefully reworking precious metals and gemstones, we create contemporary jewellery that honours the past while becoming part of your future.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can inherited jewellery be redesigned?
In many cases, yes. Gold and gemstones can often be reused or reset into a completely new piece.
Can you melt down inherited gold?
Often, yes. During a consultation we'll assess whether the existing gold is suitable for remodelling or whether another approach would be preferable.
Can family diamonds be reused?
Yes. Family diamonds are frequently reset into engagement rings, necklaces and other bespoke commissions.
Is it better to keep inherited jewellery as it is?
There isn't one answer. Some clients treasure the original piece, while others prefer to redesign it so it becomes part of their everyday life.
Can inherited rings be resized?
Many can. We'll assess each piece individually and advise on the safest option.
CONTINUE THE STORY
Some pieces are treasured because of how they look. Others because of who they belonged to. A bespoke remodelling allows both stories to live on.
If you have inherited or unworn jewellery you'd like to discuss, we'd be delighted to welcome you to our London workshop and explore the possibilities together.
