Clay, Earth, Gold and Silver: A Meeting of Materials at Maya Magal
Featuring ceramic artist Celia Macpherson

At Maya Magal, we believe in celebrating the story behind the object, the hands that shaped it, the heritage that informs it, and the materials that root it to the earth. This summer, we’re proud to bring another dimension of craft into our spaces, with the arrival of ceramicist Celia Macpherson’s sculptural pots, now available in our London stores in Coal Drops Yard and Islington.
A kindred spirit in both ethos and practice, Celia works with clay the way we work with metal, patiently, reverently, and with a deep commitment to sustainable materials and timeless form. Her ceramic vessels are tactile narratives of a life lived across three continents, shaped by ancient traditions and contemporary minimalism. These are not simply objects; they are quiet statements of beauty and meaning.
A Global Journey Rooted in Craft

Celia’s path to pottery began in London, where she juggled journalism with evening classes in ceramics. But it was her time living in East Africa—specifically Kenya—that offered her the space, literally and creatively, to develop her own studio in a round, mud-walled hut in her garden. There, alongside local potters, she immersed herself in traditional hand-building and pit-firing techniques, learning through doing, and listening to clay as it formed in her hands.
Her upbringing in Cyprus, an island steeped in ceramic history, instilled an early reverence for the medium. From Bronze Age Cypriot vessels to Native American forms, and the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, Celia’s work is a tapestry of global influence rendered in her own pared-back language. “My aim,” she says, “is to express this ancient art with a contemporary twist—to give a sense of presence to my work that is timeless.”
Where Craft and Consciousness Meet
This partnership between Celia Macpherson and Maya Magal is grounded in shared values. Like Celia, we are passionate about craftsmanship, slow design, and honouring traditional techniques through a modern lens. Our jewellery is made using 100% recycled gold and sterling silver, handcrafted in small batches by our in-house team and trusted artisan partners.
Her vessels, with their visible coiling, subtle sgraffito lines and meditative forms, resonate beautifully alongside our jewellery. There is a quiet synergy between clay and metal—both elemental, both malleable, both reflective of the maker’s touch.
